From the roundtable discussion, it is evident that current trends in multicultural counseling will have a great impact on the future. There is a growing acceptance of the role of multicultural issues and how they affect the counseling profession. This means that more and more counselors are getting acquainted with the details of multicultural counseling and they are accepting the ramification this may have on the future of counseling. Among the trends that I have identified from the roundtable discussion is the growing convergence between multicultural counseling and clinical practices (Sue, LaFromboise, Miville & Parham). There is a growing convergence between clinical practitioners like mental health professionals, clinicians, and counselors who are relying on theories of counseling to treat their patients. Towards the end of the book, there has been detailed discussion on the impact of multicultural issues on formulation and administration of treatment techniques like cognitive-behavior therapy. Cognitive behavior therapy technique can be considered a treatment tool that is important not only for counselors but also for mental health professionals and clinicians as well (Hays, 2007).
In a nutshell, multicultural counseling will therefore bring all these professionals together. The roundtable discussion shows that the future of multicultural counseling does not only rest with counselors but with other professionals as well. This means that the future understanding of multicultural issues in counseling will and the effectiveness of counseling sessions that takes into consideration these issues will largely depend on the extent to which counselors, clinicians, and mental health professionals understands and embraces them. However, the roundtable discussion clearly points out that as the world becomes more integrated, multicultural issues in counseling are here to stay and counselors need be aware of them.
